We strive to breed healthy, structurally sound Barbado da Terceira dogs with outstanding temperaments. We do not breed for specific colors but for dogs indicative of the standard established by the Portuguese Breed Club, which you can read HERE. We are dedicated to responsibly promoting the breed in the USA.
Our puppies and dogs are treated as we would our children by always keeping their best interests in mind. By ensuring they are given plenty of mental and physical exercise, good nutrition, and guidance toward good behavior, we provide you with a puppy on a solid path to becoming a wonderful family member.
Countless hours are spent introducing our puppies to people and other dogs of all ages, shapes, sizes, and colors. Frequent positive new experiences are stepping stones for building confidence and helping to create well-balanced adult dogs.
We are committed to pairing puppies with families and individuals compatible with the puppy’s temperament. Not all dogs want a job. Some like to go on long walks, hikes, or jogging. Others may enjoy agility, herding trials, or other competition sports. Some dogs want to lie around on a couch. Dogs are returned to kennels or surrendered to shelters because they don’t meet the family’s lifestyle, not because they aren’t cute or a particular color.
Transparency is important to us, and prospective owners must understand that this breed is in danger of extinction. Mating pairs are selected and tested through DNA, and pedigrees are compared through dog breeder software to ensure genetic compatibility. Sometimes, imperfect traits must be overlooked as we progress through the ongoing effort to grow the gene pool. We are working closely with Portugal Barbado da Terceira Breed Club and others.
People who receive a puppy from Amaroso Barbado Kennel will be joining a community, a family of dog owners, who love this rare breed. We will provide helpful resources, training tips, behavior guidance, and other support as we learn about this newly recognized AKC breed, the Barbado da Terceira cattle dog.
